Wynonna Judd brings greatest hits tour to Peace Center: Upstate Beat

Wynonna Judd

Hold on to your cowboy hats — Wynonna Judd is coming to town. On June 18, Judd will perform at the Peace Center as part of her career-retrospective show called “The Greatest Hits Tour.”

If you’re a country music fan, this is good news. Whether singing as part of The Judds with her late Mom, Naomi, or stepping out on her own with 1992’s massive “Wynonna” album, the 60-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer has plenty of hits to choose from.

So that means that her set at the Peace Center will include golden classics from The Judds era, songs like “Love Can Build a Bridge” and “Why Not Me” and “Mama He’s Crazy.” But it will also include the megahits from that self-titled debut solo album, the one that sold 5 million copies, and her subsequent albums, most notably the triple-platinum “Tell Me Why.”

Which means that the brassy “No One Else on Earth,” the irresistibly catchy “Tell Me Why” and the heartbreaking “She Is His Only Need” are also part of the show, all delivered in that powerful, husky, emotive voice that made her a superstar.

But the most fascinating thing about this tour isn’t the nonstop classics, it’s that the tour is happening at all.

Judd played some shows back in 2023, but before that it had been more than a decade since she’d been onstage. That’s because, as she’s discussed, behind that forceful gale of a voice lies an incredibly shy woman who deals with a lot of performance anxiety.

When she performed with country star Jelly Roll at the 2023 Country Music Awards, she was so nervous that she needed help steadying herself. In interviews, she’s talked about how her anxiety about performing or even speaking publicly actually led to her getting vertigo.

I attempted, like many others have, to set up an interview with Judd. I even offered to send the questions via email if a voice-to-voice conversation was out of the question. I never heard back. And to be honest, I wasn’t that surprised. Or upset.

Let her conserve that voice for the anthems she’s about to deliver at the Peace Center. Let her be shy now so that she can feel the love and warmth of the Upstate country music crowd that no doubt still supports her.

So no hard feelings, Ms. Judd, really. I get it. Conserve that energy and use it to perform on June 18 like the true country diva you are.
