Greenville Habitat for Humanity dedicates new affordable home in Greer
A single mother and her two children have a new affordable home thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County and Bank of America.
The house located in Habitat Greenville’s community of Ruddy Creek Circle in Greer was dedicated to the Dendy family on May 28. The family was joined by the volunteers who helped build their home and representatives from the project’s partners.
“Today is a celebration as we come together to dedicate this house for Camilia and her two sons. She entered our program with gusto, and we are so proud that today she’s giving this house to her sons,” said Gail Smith Peay, Habitat’s director of advocacy and community engagement.
Camilia Dendy completed Habitat Greenville’s homeownership program, which helps low-income families become homeowners. She expressed her gratitude for Habitat Greenville and the sponsors involved in the project at Wednesday’s dedication ceremony.
“This home is a fresh start for us and I’m just really thankful for the chance to have a place to call our own,” Dendy said.

Bank of America has been a longtime partner with Habitat Greenville, providing financial support and volunteers to help construct homes across the county. Stacy Brandon, president of Bank of America Upstate South Carolina, said the company has completed approximately 2,500 hours of Habitat volunteer work in the Upstate and given over $200,000 to the nonprofit’s affordable housing efforts.
“We know that affordable housing and home ownership provide more than just four walls for families… they offer safety, stability and contribute to the long-term success of our community,” Brandon said.
Other project partners include Publix and Greenville County Redevelopment Authority. Joe Smith, executive director of the GCRA, explained that Habitat Greenville is their community housing development organization. GCRA donated the land and provided financial support for the affordable housing project. Smith also briefly spoke at the dedication ceremony about recent efforts to reduce GCRA’s funding for affordable housing.
“We’re under tremendous pressure right now from all avenues – from the national level, local level, everywhere – to cut our funding,” Smith said. “We need to leave our funding alone for affordable housing because we need it critically to provide housing for our workforce, people here in the Upstate.”
