Retired Greenville judge awarded Order of the Palmetto
Judge Alex Kinlaw Jr., the first African-American to serve on the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court bench and who retired in December, was awarded South Carolina’s highest civilian honor during a ceremony in Greenville June 12.
The Order of the Palmetto was awarded by Gov. Henry McMaster in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in public service.
A Georgetown native, Kinlaw worked in private practice in Greenville and Greenwood counties for decades before being named resident Family Court Judge in the Thirteenth Circuit by the General Assembly in 2009. He served in that role until his election to the Circuit Court Bench in February 2018 where he served until his retirement last December.
Kinlaw served actively in state and national bar associations and on the boards of a number of local organizations. Kinlaw and his wife, Yvette, attend Reedy River Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville.
