South Hudson Street bridge replacement in Greenville to begin in early July
South Carolina Department of Transportation’s replacement of the South Hudson Street bridge in Greenville will begin in early July.
The estimated $3.7 million project will replace the bridge over the Reedy River near Unity Park. The bridge has been closed since it was damaged during Hurricane Helene in late September 2024.
The existing bridge will be demolished and a new structure will be built. SCDOT is working with the city of Greenville regarding the bridge’s connection to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. Drainage and sidewalk improvements along South Hudson Street will also be completed as part of the project.
The anticipated start day for construction is July 7. According to SCDOT, the department coordinated with the city to allow the Clemson MBA Fireworks at Unity Park to take place before construction begins. The annual event will be held on July 3.
The project’s right-of-way acquisition process must be completed before construction can start. SCDOT recently purchased 0.028 acres of right-of-way adjacent to the A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School’s road frontage from Greenville County Schools. The school district’s board of trustees approved the $50,000 right-of-way acquisition on May 27.
Construction for the bridge replacement project is expected to last until early 2026.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to move this project forward,” said Hannah Robinson, media relations manager for SCDOT.
