President Miller creates lasting legacy at Greenville Tech

Back in May of 2023, Dr. Keith Miller, president of Greenville Technical College, was presented with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.

The Order of the Palmetto is typically presented in recognition of a South Carolina resident’s lifetime of extraordinary achievement, service, and contributions on a national or statewide scale.

It’s difficult to think of someone more qualified for that accolade than Dr. Miller. Since becoming Greenville Tech’s president in 2008, Dr. Miller has been a relentless champion of the student body, creating or championing various programs that helped make education possible for everyone.

Dr. Miller is retiring in July, but his legacy is secure, having helped Greenville Technical College thrive and expand over the past 17 years, perhaps because he himself began his higher education at a community college.

The Prisma Health Center for Health and Life Sciences is now open at Greenville Technical College’s Barton Campus. A ribbon cutting for the new facility was held Aug. 20.

Since arriving in 2008, Dr. Miller has been working nonstop to improve the lives of his students.

He saw a need in the regional job market and created innovative solutions to increase our workforce like the Center for Manufacturing Innovation, which gives students the tools needed to succeed in advanced manufacturing careers, and the Prisma Health Center for Health & Life Sciences, which trains the next generation of health care professionals.

Thanks to Dr. Miller, Greenville Tech has the state’s only applied bachelor’s degree program at the two-year college level, a program which helped produce a pipeline of skilled graduates that, in a single year, added $627 million in income to the Greenville County economy. Miller and his team worked with political leaders in 2018 to gain approval for legislation that created the program, which Gov. Henry McMaster signed into law.

Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Miller emphasized giving each student an equal opportunity for success from the beginning, fostering programs like ASPIRE that turned the college’s lowest performing group into its highest.

Dr. Miller’s legacy isn’t just secure on the local level. He’s helped shape the nation’s educational approach with positions at the American Association of Community Colleges and the American Council on Education.

As Dr. Miller transitions from the president’s office, it seems fitting to acknowledge and appreciate his dedication to his students and to the state as a whole. His work will live on through the lives of people who got an education because of his efforts.
