NYT bestselling author Kevin Wilson to visit Upstate to promote new novel
Kevin Wilson, a New York Times bestselling author, will make a stop at Cyrill-Westside Library in Spartanburg to promote his latest novel, “Run for the Hills.”
To craft his most-recent work, Wilson found inspiration in family dynamics and how families can operate.
The story kicks off when Madeline Hill and her mom receive a visit at their Tennessee farm from a man named Reuben Hill, who informs her that he believes she’s his half sister. Both siblings were abandoned by their father and Reuben tells her that he hired a detective to track down their father and a string of other half-siblings. He asks her to leave her home and join him for a road trip to meet their half-siblings and learn about the lives their father created as he moved onto each family.
“It’s really a story about family in all those strange forms and those weird places it can take us,” Wilson said. “One of the things I was interested in was what would it be like if your biological family could also be your found family. That all of a sudden, these people you didn’t know existed are connected to you in ways you hadn’t known and what would that mean. It became a new, kind of interesting way for me to think about it.”
While families are at the heart of all of Wilson’s novels, he honed in on how the father appeared to be a mystery to the siblings in “Run to the Hills.”
“I thought a lot about if your father left you is one thing, but what I wanted to know is what would happen if he just kept making new families,” Wilson said. “Would that mean that he thought yours was a failure or was it something about him that he couldn’t sustain. I think it was just this idea of a father who was a mystery, not just to you but to all of your half-siblings, seemed interesting to me.”
Wilson’s appearance May 20 at 7 p.m. is part of Hub City Bookshop’s signing and reading series. The event is free to attend. For more information, visit hubcity.org.
