Greenville Theatre recently donated $3,628 to Touched by ALS.

The Greenville-based nonprofit provides financial assistance and emotional support to people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The incurable nervous system disease affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a loss of muscle control.

One of the two public ALS clinics in South Carolina is in Greenville. The Greenville Theatre’s donation will help cover the cost of in-home care and be used to purchase necessary equipment such as a generator, a portable ramp and feeding tubes for patients.

“The cost of care is so expensive for patients out of pocket, and this donation is going to allow us to provide respite care for families, said Suzy Hobbs, clinic coordinator of the Prisma Health ALS Clinic in Greenville.

Greenville Theatre raised donations for Touched by ALS during its run of “Tuesdays with Morrie” in April. The two-person play, based on the best-selling 1997 memoir by Mitch Albom, shares the heartfelt story of someone dying of ALS. Max Quinlan, producing artistic director of Greenville Theatre, presented a check to the nonprofit organization May 16.

“To be able to give another donation to another nonprofit is such a beautiful thing for us,” Quinlan said. “It’s something that we’re really passionate about, is making sure we are serving our community in the best way possible.”

Sarah Eaton, a member of the Touched by ALS board, said the organization appreciates the Greenville Theatre partnership and looks forward to working with the theater in the future.
