
Greenville Housing Fund breaks ground on Southernside East housing for seniors
Low- to moderate-income renters aged 55 and over will soon have new housing options with the July 1 groundbreaking of Southernside East, a 93-unit affordable apartment development at the corner of West Washington and Hudson streets just north of Unity Park.
Representatives from development partners Greenville Housing Fund and Harmony Housing Affordable Development were joined by elected officials and affordable housing advocates for the groundbreaking ceremony.
The project was made possible in part through SC Housing’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit and the donation of a portion of the land by the city of Greenville.

Renters aged 55-plus will reside in two contemporary neighborhood-scale buildings designed by local architects McMillan Pazdan Smith. Each one- or two-bedroom apartment is outfitted with a balcony to encourage easy connection to the outdoors.
Other amenities include in-unit laundry connections as well as a community laundry area, fitness, computer, and community gathering rooms, a mail center, a leasing office and separate private storage rooms.
Leasing for the project is expected to begin in fall 2026 and will be managed through an onsite office by local property management firm NHE Inc. Occupancy is expected in early 2027.
The project is the latest of more than $21 million the Greenville Housing Fund has invested in affordable housing in the seven years since its inception. That investment has leveraged more than $300 million in additional investment to create or preserve nearly 2,000 units of housing in Greenville County.
