Greenville Humane Society breaks ground on facility expansion

The Greenville Humane Society broke ground on its newest expansion, The Greenville Humane Society Spay/Neuter Clinic and Community Pavilion, Feb. 26.

The project was unveiled in October 2024, with plans calling for a new, 9,260-square-foot spay and neuter clinic and 7,950-square-foot multipurpose pavilion.

The spay and neuter clinic and adjacent pavilion will be located along Airport Road in Greenville, across the street from the existing facility at 305 Airport Road and near the Green Line of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. The building currently on the site will be demolished to make way for a space that aligns more closely with the needs of the Humane Society.

“This expansion is going to really give us the capacity to connect even more with the people and animals of Greenville and we’re really excited about that,” said Cindy Crick, board chair for the nonprofit. “That’s really the whole point of this and here we are on the Swamp Rabbit Trail which is the great connector of Greenville.”

Humane Society CEO Rachel Delport was unable to give a speech during the groundbreaking, so board member Heather Meadors Whitley read her words.

“With Greenville’s explosive growth, we’re seeing more families than ever who need support to help their dogs become their best selves,” Whitley said. “The new pavilion will allow us to expand these vital training services to our whole community, keeping more dogs in loving homes where they belong.”

In 2024, the Humane Society performed 13,500 spays and neuters.

Teddy was awarded a lamb chop stuffed animal for his efforts as the project’s Capital Campaign Ambassador.

The Humane Society purchased the property in March 2023. The project requires an $8.5 million investment being raised through the Love is a Four-Legged Word. campain. Currently, 28% of the money has been raised.

Also present at the groundbreaking was Randi A. Barry, president of the Dodie Anderson Charitable Foundation, which made a $400,000 match donation in October 2024. The gift was matched in late January 2025 making a total donation of $800,000 to the campaign. The Anderson family has long been involved with the nonprofit. In 2017, it named the Bob Anderson Medical Center after Barry’s father.

Johnathan and Teddy Lower of viral social media account A Guy and a Golden made an appearance during the event and joined in on the groundbreaking. Lower has worked with the nonprofit to take adoptable dogs for a day out on the town which he posts on his social platform for Shelter Dog Saturdays. The duo has partnered with the nonprofit for the expansion with Teddy, the dog half of the dad-and-dog duo, serving as a capital campaign ambassador.
